about

In this intensely personal and exquisitely crafted suite of “country inflected jazz” songs, Zakian has drawn on her own experience of melancholic depression.
Like every great true jazz singer, Zakian forges a deep connection with the emotional content of a lyric that can make a well-worn standard fresh and her own. Now she brings that emotional sensitivity and clear-eyed candour to her own lyrics, evoking a different facet of introspective reflection in each track of the EP, in songs that are at once personal and relatable.
Though always minor in feel if not strictly in key, the material is not unrelievedly downbeat. In Minor Moments, Zakian reflects on small daily pleasures that lift the lowest mood, and in stately waltz Plainsong, she fondly recalls getting together with her husband of more than 20 years, Paul Bartholomew, whose earthy baritone sax weaves across the track. “One simple moment is all it takes, small and sharp and sheer. That single moment that changed your life. Now your future is here,” she notes, wryly observing that it’s the opportunities grasped as well as missed that determine life’s course.
Now fully recovered from the blues and ill health that gripped her for more than a year, Zakian said: “I am very proud of these songs. Distilling my feelings into words and collaborating with Martin on these lovely pieces is a lasting compensation for getting through what I can now say was one of the most difficult periods of my life.”
